Agilia’s Carbon Reduction Plan

In April 2022, Agilia committed to reduce its Carbon Emissions through the SME Climate Hub and were recognised by the UN Race to Zero campaign. From that point, we have been working to implement a pragmatic and carefully considered carbon reduction plan for the company which will halve our carbon emissions by 2030 and to reach carbon neutral by no later than 2050.

Agilia’s carbon emission baseline emissions footprint was set in 2021, during the Covid19 pandemic. The pandemic had material implications for the way the business operated and how we worked with our clients, including disproportionately high levels of working from home, low levels of commuting and a reduction in office space.

Despite the impact of the pandemic, Agilia has continued to grow rapidly. Since our 2021 carbon reduction plan was developed, our workforce has grown by 50%, from 26 FTE to 39 FTE. We expect this trajectory to continue in the short term and we will continue to pursue initiatives which reduce our carbon emissions per FTE. The notable increases in our emissions over the last year, and focus for us over the next period, are:

  • Purchased Goods and Services: Insurance and Pensions have been a significant driver of our scope 3 emissions increasing by more than 73% year-on-year.

  • Office space: In order to accommodate company growth, we have expanded our office space at our London and Middlesbrough offices. This has increased our scope 2 emissions, however we have sought to limit the impact of this in our sourcing approach, which is detailed further in our carbon reduction plan.

  • Business Travel and Staff Commuting: Whilst we continue to encourage a hybrid approach to work, our commuting and business travel during the pandemic were negligible. As social distancing restrictions have fallen away, we have had to adapt to the needs of our clients and to foster the company culture and knowledge sharing, which our staff value.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan sets out some of the initiatives we will be putting in place in order to maintain a positive and sustainable trajectory to mitigate the impact of our growing business.

While it is vital we are transparent about the work that still needs to be done in order to achieve our goals, it is just as important to acknowledge the positive milestones. While the industry benchmark for our sector is 641 tonnes CO2e, Agilia falls well below that at 206 CO2e from 1st January 2022 to 31st December 2022. While this remains a way off from achieving our carbon neutral goals, it is positive to see that here at Agilia we are already significantly below the industry average.
